Ecuador Summer Global Conference

July 7-13, 2017



Day 1: Friday, July 7, 2017, Quito
Upon arrival in Quito's airport, you will be transferred to the hotel in Quito.

Day 2: Saturday, July 8, 2017, Quito 
This morning you will enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city of Quito. First, you will be taken to a viewpoint, called Itchimbia, where you will learn about the location of the city on the foothills of the Pichincha Volcano. Your guide will take you for a walk through the culturally diverse history of Quito. Have a closer look at the heart of the city of Quito: the Independence Square with the Government and the Bishop’s Palace. You will then continue north and stop at the Equator Line. As you visit the ethnographic museum Intiñan, you will learn about the traditions and ways of life of the indigenous cultures of Ecuador. In the evening, you will drive to Patio Andaluz where an Ecuadorian chocolate producer will explain to you the process of chocolate production and finish off with a chocolate tasting. Afterwards enjoy a welcome dinner as a group. (B,D)

Day 3: Sunday, July 9, 2017, Otavalo 
This morning, you will drive north to the province of Imbabura. In Otavalo, discover the indigenous handicrafts market. The residents of the area have achieved economic prosperity as a result of their skill in weaving a tremendous variety of designs in belts, tapestries, ponchos and other clothing items. In the afternoon, you will stop at the indigenous community of Peguche and you will visit a family that will show you how the tapestries are still woven in a loom. Then continue on to Hacienda Pinsaqui where you will participate in a cooking class and learn how to prepare a local dish. (B,D)

Day 4: Monday, July 10, 2017, Papallacta 
In the morning, you will visit Laguna Cuicocha, a crater lake located at 9,000 ft. and with a diameter of 3 km. Two islands emerge from the center, both of volcanic origin, covered with vegetation and rimmed with totora, a type of reed. Take a short hike in this area (if the weather permits). You will continue to the town Cotacachi, Ecuador’s biggest center of leatherwork. Here you can stroll through the small streets and explore the various shops. In Cayambe, you will stop at the Hacienda La Compañia where one of the owners will show you around. You will visit the chapel and the plantation of roses. Later you will enjoy lunch at the house of the hacienda. In the afternoon, drive to the small Andean village of Papallacta located at 9,100 ft., famous for its thermal baths. (B,L)

Day 5: Tuesday, July 11, 2017, Riobamba 
In the morning, you will have some free time to enjoy the pleasant effect of the warm, odorless thermal water surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Then, you will start to drive back to the highlands along the “Avenue of the volcanoes”, which got its name from Alexander von Humboldt. Using the Pan-American Highway, which winds its way through the Andean mountain chain, you will have a spectacular view of the perfect formed snow caped Cotopaxi Volcano, one of the highest volcanoes in the world. With some luck you might be able to see the impressive Tungurahua and Chimborazo volcanoes. You will observe how every single inch of land is being cultivated by these hard working indigenous people. Late in the afternoon, you will arrive in Riobamba. (B,D)

Day 6: Wednesday, July 12, 2017, Guayaquil 
After an early breakfast you will be taken to the train station in Alausí to board the train for the famous Devil´s Nose ride. Enjoy the fascinating landscape of the Andes. This is for sure a very special way to see the country! Then, you will start the drive to the city of Guayaquil. On the way, you will see the enormous changes of vegetation as you descend to the coast. In Guayaquil, you will stop to visit the Ecua Andino Panama hat factory. You will see how the well-known hats are produced, finished and packed to be exported to many countries. You will take a short panoramic tour on the way to the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Thursday, July 13, 2017, Departure
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the US. (B)
