ACIS Service Learning

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
-Margaret Mead

All ACIS tours connect participants with the societies they visit.  ACIS Service Learning Tours push this ideology one step farther, and provide participants the opportunity to actively and positively contribute to the community. The tours and tour extensions include service projects that are safe, culturally interesting and genuinely beneficial to a local community.

The goal of each project is to educate and engage participants while at the same time help a community that needs it.

Depending on their specific requirements, students may use their ACIS service work to satisfy community service requirements at school.  All participants receive a certificate of completion for participating in an ACIS Service Learning project.

Service Learning Tour Extensions

Costa Rica Service Extension
Any ACIS Costa Rica tour can become a service learning tour by adding a three-night extension in Sarapiqui.

Service learning projects will be run in conjunction with the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) or Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). The SCLC and OTS are prestigious organizations that perform social and ecological work.  Scientists throughout the US travel to Costa Rica to work at these institutions.

Service projects include:

  • collecting specimens for the scientists to study
  • monitoring the quality of the drinking water
  • working in an orphanage
  • teaching English
  • cleaning the environment
  • and more. . .

Specific projects for each group are selected as your departure date nears, based on where the need is greatest. The service work will be added into your tour based on where it fits best in your itinerary.

Service Learning

Community service meets travel.

We'll match you and your students with service projects that are safe, culturally interesting and beneficial to the local communities you'll visit on your tour.

ACIS Sponsored School in Cambodia

ACIS has teamed up with American Assistance for Cambodia (AAFC) to construct a school in Khporb Veng village. Once complete, ACIS is sponsoring the school to provide value-added improvements. For every Crossing the Mekong trip taken by ACIS Group Leaders, ACIS will provide an enhancement to the school.
