ACIS teamed up with American Assistance for Cambodia (AAFC) to construct a school in Khporb Veng village. The school is now in complete and will help educate up to 400 students a year.
Teachers who travel change lives
During last summer’s Global Teachers Conference in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, two ACIS employees, Liz Burns and Tracy Miller, along with 36 Group Leaders from across the United States, toured Cambodia and were moved by the poor conditions. Liz recalls how the group felt a strong, collective desire to help the community:
"We talked about how at ACIS we believe travel changes lives, but this trip raised the question, 'Can we change the lives of the people we meet when we travel?' One group leader, Mike Conn, discovered AAFC and their mission to build schools throughout Cambodia. I knew the second I looked at the website that this is something ACIS could and should do. I'm so proud of ACIS for embarking on this generous and exciting philanthropic adventure."
How you can help
ACIS is offering groups a chance to visit and volunteer at the school. On every Crossing the Mekong trip, groups will visit the school to see new developments and meet with the students. In addition, for each trip booked, ACIS will provide an enhancement to the school.
"This is an exciting endeavor for our organization to use travel as a means to make the world a better place," ACIS President Peter Jones remarks. "We cannot change the world, but in our own little way and through our modest and highly driven voluntourism efforts, we can make a difference."
